Roman Catholics celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist at Mass. The Eucharist or Communion feast is a sacramental ritual- a special privilege afforded to believers, unifying them with their Savior. The Communion service is simply the reenactment of the Lord's Last Supper. The disciples did not understand what would transpire over the next few days, but they followed His instruction. He broke the bread and sipped from the cup, passing them along to the others. He told them, "This is my body (and my blood) which will be broken for you. Do this in memory of me."
Following Biblical readings and prayers the priest or Officiant sanctifies unleavened wafers and wine (or grape juice) into the physical body and blood of Christ. The elements appear in their original form, but Catholics believe Christ embodies the elements. When communion is received, Christ is entering the believers' heart and soul. The Communion Service can be celebrated at home, or anywhere believers come together. It does not have to be in a church. Devout Christians may receive Communion daily. Several congregations celebrate weekly Eucharist, a few monthly, and another group receives Communion once or twice a year (Easter and Christmas).
The Christian practice of Communion is a sacramental rite to most Christians, regardless of their denomination. Jesus Christ shared the elements of bread and wine with His disciples at the Passover Seder Christians call the Last Supper of Christ. While the bread and wine were dietary staples at Passover for all Jews, this particular Passover feast had special significance to Christ's followers.
Jesus was preparing his disciples for what was about to take place, His crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection. As He broke the bread, Jesus explained, "This is my body…Do this in memory of me." Then he took the wine, proclaiming, "This is my blood which shall be shed for all men, so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me."
